5 vierstimmige schottische Melodien - harmonised Hymns of the Scottish Highlands

Lachlan MacBean: The Songs and Hymns of the Scottish Highlands, 1888

Die folgenden fünf harmonisierten Melodien stammen aus der Liedersammlung "The Songs and Hymns of the Scottish Highlands" von Lachlan MacBean. Sie wurde 1888 veröffentlicht und beinhaltet 64 alte schottische bzw. gälische Lieder inklusive der Liedtexte in Gälisch (Scottish Gaelic, eine keltische Sprache) sowie der englischsprachigen Übersetzungen. Das Buch ist zweigeteilt in die Kapitel "Part 1: Sacred Songs of the Gael" und "Part 2: The Songs of the Gael". Während der zweite Teil 32 weltliche Folkslieder mit charakteristischer schottischer Melodieführung vorstellt, präsentiert der erste Teil 32 "Sacred Songs", also 'heilige' Lieder im Sinn von religiösen Liedern mit christlichen Texten, bzw. "Hymns", hier im Sinn von Lobgesang oder Kirchenliedern, die allerdings selten, wenn überhaupt, in der Kirche gesungen wurden, wie der Autor anmerkt:

The Sacred Songs. The present is, so far as the compiler knows, the first collection of Highland Sacred Melodies printed. The most popular have been chosen, and in most cases the airs have been noted down from native singers. These hymns are seldom, if ever, used in worship, even privately, in the Highlands, but they are heard not infrequently at friendly gatherings and in the family circle. Even the selection in this book will probably recall to many a Highlander memories of youth and home. [MacBean 1888, Notes]

Die Melodien sind einstimmig und im Violinschlüssel notiert - mit Ausnahme der fünf nachfolgenden. Diese fünf 'Lobeshymnen' sind vierstimmig gesetzt für Sopran, Alt, Tenor und Bass, also für einen Gesangschor, könnten aber beispielsweise auch von einem Streichquartett oder Blockflöten-Ensemble gespielt werden.
